Title: A Piezoelectric 3D Microtissue for the Investigation into Cellular Mechanics during Chronic Oscillatory Loading

Abstract: In human tissue, cells interact with one another and the surrounding extracellular matrix in three dimensions. To recapitulate these conditions in vitro, we have previously developed a passive ‘microtissue’ model. In this model, cells self-assemble around a pair of cantilevers into a 3D arrangement similar to human tissue. In contrast to this previous work, we present a novel active ‘microtissue’ model with cantilevers that are both actuators and force sensors. This device will hopefully permit the study of oscillatory loading, a known stimulus for cell response, and contractile function, and thus, be an invaluable tool for future investigations into diseases such as asthma. This talk will focus on the challenges encountered when using microfabrication techniques for device development, the methods that did and did not work, and preliminary work done to characterize the device.

Refreshments will be provided.
Please bring your own cup.
